Research Partnership Programme

Every year, from August to December, the Research Partnership Programme (RPP) provides five researchers from developing and transitional countries the opportunity to be research partners at the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR). The programme is funded by Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) and organised by the DIHR. It appeals to both junior (Master’s degree/equivalent) and senior researchers (PhD/equivalent).

The aim of the RPP is to:
• Strengthen research capacities in academic institutions in developing or transitional countries
• Upgrade and expand human rights expertise and documentation
• Consolidate DIHRs contacts with human rights research institutions and networks in partner countries
• Attract strong human rights research projects
REGIONAL FOCUS 2009-10: ASIA

In 2009-2010 the RPP specifically invite scholars from the following transitional countries in Asia: Cambodia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Vietnam. The topics of the research projects should preferably fall into the following two categories:

（1） Migration and labour rights; or

（2）Access to Justice and Rule of Law issues, specifically including topics like criminal procedure and criminal justice reform, administrative justice, including accountability, oversight and complaints mechanisms, National Human Rights/ombudsman Institutions and legal aid.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The Research Partnership Programme is located in the DIHR’s Research Department. Research partners are provided with office facilities within this department, giving them the opportunity to interact with our human rights researchers. We appoint a supervisor/sparring partner for each research partner and together the research partner and the supervisor agree on a plan for the research activities.

We provide a number of courses and seminars designed specifically for the research partners (seminars on access to human rights documentation and literature, research methodology and relevant human rights issues). Research partners are expected to participate in seminars, conferences, group discussions and the daily life of the Institute. At the end of the research period, a discussion of research findings will be held at the DIHR. Research partners can publish the results of their work on the DIHR website and in the printed RPP series, or through other media.

Please note that the DIHR does not award academic degrees. However, the research programme can be a part of e.g. PhD or other doctoral studies with another institution.

RESEARCH GRANTS
An RPP grant covers expenses in relation to accommodation, insurance and international flights. Moreover, research partners will receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses in Denmark. Research partners will be provided accommodation by the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) in central Copenhagen,a short distance from the institute. DFC handles the administration of the grants and organises numerous social-cultural events. As the cost of living in Denmark is high, research partners should not expect to be able to save money. These grants do not allow research partners to invite family members to Denmark.

Research partners shall be able to communicate freely and conduct their academic work in English. Candidates will be selected through a screening process including an interview.

HOW TO APPLY

If you are interested in applying for the autumn semester (from August to December 2010), please submit your application no later than January 15th 2010. We will communicate our decision to you by April 1st at the latest. Only applications in English will be considered. Applications must include:
1. Cover page with Name, postal address, email address, telephone number
2. Curriculum Vitae.
3. Research proposal (5-10 pages) stating: A) Field of research, B) Research objective, C) Methodology, D) Expected output and E) Timeline for the work
4. An academic article or paper produced by the applicant.
5. Certifiable academic degree.
6. Proof of institutional affiliation.
A letter of recommendation from the institution of affiliation.
